TOP 10 PLAYERS WHO GREW UP POOR

10 – Luka Modric

EURO 2016 - Turkey v Croatia

Real Madrid ace Luka Modric is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in Europe’s football, and rightly so. The 31-years-old Croatian grew up in a war zone. When the Croatian War of Independence started back in 1991, Modric was just 5-years-old. It was a rough time for every Croatian, but things for the little Luka got worse when his father was killed in the conflict. Modric spent entire months in refugee camps, surrounded by flying shells and grenades. Luka Modric kept playing football in the camps and the hotels in the vicinity, despite the bleak circumstances. Hajduk Split, Modric’s boyhood club, rejected him. Luka Modric never gave in- his doggedness and perseverance paid off.
