WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE STARTING XI

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon, £32.6 million

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Parma had some of the most promising players in their roster; Gianluigi Buffon was one of them. The Italian goalkeeper was only 19-years-old at the time, but he had already shown what he was made of. Juventus were keen on signing a young and talented goalkeeper, and Gigi Buffon seemed to fit the bill. In the summer of 2001, Juventus and Parma agreed on a deal for the transfer of the up-and-coming world class keeper. The Old Lady paid 100 billion lire (£32.7 million in today’s money) for the services of Buffon. The rest is history.
